Tesla Model Y Included in a Chinese Provincial Government’s Vehicle Procurement Catalog

According to a procurement announcement released by the government of Jiangsu Province in Eastern China on July 4, the Tesla Model Y has been included in the Jiangsu Provincial Government’s new energy vehicle procurement catalog. This marks the first time that a Tesla electric vehicle has been included in a Chinese government procurement catalog. The procurement shortlist also includes models such as Huawei’s Wanjie M7, Changan UNI-K/Z, Roewe D5X, and Volvo XC40.

The procurement quotas include categories of sedans, off-road vehicles and SUVs, commercial vehicles and MPVs, pickup trucks, and medium and large-sized passenger vehicles. For SUVs, the price limit is set at 250,000 yuan, with a requirement for a pure electric range exceeding 400km. Currently, the official guide price for the Tesla Model Y standard range version is 249,900 yuan, with a CLTC pure electric range of 554 km, 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.9 seconds, and a top speed of 217 km/h.

Previously, Chinese authorities had questioned Tesla’s data security, suspecting it of espionage, and subsequently banned Tesla cars from entering government agencies, military facilities, and their surroundings.

On April 28, 2024, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made an “unexpected” visit to China. Less than 24 hours before and after meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, he received a “green light” on automotive data security. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system will also be implemented in China.
