On Wednesday, the topic of “Tesla breaks contracts with recent graduates” trended on Weibo, sparking discussions across various Chinese social media platforms.
Reports surfaced on Maimai, Xiaohongshu, and Weibo, with users expressing concerns about Tesla’s recent actions. According to multiple posts on Maimai, Tesla had reportedly rescinded job offers to 2024 graduating students, offering them one month’s compensation instead. In response, several automotive company HR representatives commented below affected individuals’ posts, offering priority interviews to those impacted by Tesla’s decision.
Affected netizens took to social media to share their frustrations, highlighting the challenges they faced as the “spring recruitment” season for Chinese graduates was coming to a close. While Tesla provided one month’s compensation, many expressed the difficulty of finding new employment at this stage. Failing to secure a job during the critical spring recruitment period would further complicate their job search as recent graduates.
The Paper, a Chinese media outlet, interviewed Mr. Liu, one of the individuals impacted by Tesla’s contract terminations. After receiving the offer, Liu had created a chat group with around 10 soon-to-be graduates set to join Tesla. Currently, all members of the group have had their offers rescinded by Tesla. Liu also mentioned coming across online rumors suggesting that all job offers to recent graduates from Tesla this year had been rescinded on a significant scale, although he couldn’t verify the accuracy of these claims. As of the latest update, Tesla has not issued a public response to these reports.
Tesla has been facing a series of controversies recently. On April 15th, CEO Elon Musk announced in an email to employees that the company would be reducing its global workforce by over 10%. Furthermore, Tesla revealed plans to lay off more than 6,000 employees in Texas and California. According to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices submitted to the Texas Workforce Commission, the layoffs are scheduled to commence on June 14th and last for 14 days. A similar notice submitted to California disclosed Tesla’s intention to lay off 3,332 employees across multiple facilities in the state.
