The fastest charging electric vehicles sold in the US come from Hyundai and KIA according to a new real-world test at L3 chargers. Tesla, which has the most expansive Level 3 250kW charging infrastructure, comes at number 10 in the ranking.

Out of all electric vehicles one can buy in the US, the ones with an 800V powertrain like those coming from Hyundai, KIA, or Porsche, rule the fastest charging EV ranking. The first Tesla comes at the honorable 10th place and it is the Model 3 LR, which can add 569 miles of range per one hour of charging at a fast 250kW pile.

These are the results of the standardized EV charging test by Edmunds which measures the average consumption per 100 miles driven in equal conditions, and then tests how many miles of range those same EVs can restore for an hour spent at an L3 charger. As a result, the EV charging speed ranking takes both the efficiency and charging speed of each particular brand and model into account to arrive at the whopping 868 mi/hr of the new Hyundai Ioniq 6 Limited RWD.

It is followed by the KIA EV 6 Wind RWD model with 769mi/hr, and the dual-motor version of the Ioniq 6 with 769mi/hr charging speeds. In fact, out of the top 10 fastest charging electric vehicles in the US, six are made by Hyundai and KIA, so these two companies must be doing something right.

There are two Porsche Taycan models that have wiggled their way into the 800V hall of fame, and one Mercedes, the EQS 450+. As mentioned, the first Tesla here comes at 10th place simply because its 400V powertrain doesn’t allow it to take more than the sustained 136 kW charging power measured, while the Hyundai and KIA models consistently take 200 kW or more.

In fact, the Model 3 Long Range is a tad more efficient in terms of power consumption per 100 miles driven than the Ioniq 6 winner, but the Hyundai’s 800V powertrain allows it to sustain 210 kw average charging power throughout the session despite that the Model 3 initially notches higher peak charging of 251 kW.

Tesla is said to use the modern 800V architecture for the first time in the Cybertruck, so there might be some movers and shakers in the Edmunds EV charging ranks once the Cybertruck hits the market after its November 30 release date.

Wooed by tech since the industrial espionage of Apple computers and the times of pixelized Nintendos, Daniel went and opened a gaming club when personal computers and consoles were still an expensive rarity. Nowadays, fascination is not with specs and speed but rather the lifestyle that computers in our pocket, house, and car have shoehorned us in, from the infinite scroll and the privacy hazards to authenticating every bit and move of our existence.
