On July 15th, when reporters visited the Gigafactory Shanghai, Tesla‘s Gigafactory Shanghai was running at full capacity. On the Model Y production line, a new Model Y car rolls off the line approximately every 30 seconds.
Earlier this year, there were reports that Tesla was limiting the car production at Gigafactory Shanghai. Reuters even reported in late May that Tesla planned to cut the factory’s car production by at least 20% between March and June 2024.
Although Tesla China has remained silent on this issue, new car registrations and exports this year have indeed been lower than the same period last year. However, as the third quarter approaches, Tesla seems to be making a full sprint towards its end-of-year delivery target.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated that this year’s car sales are expected to exceed last year’s. In order to achieve this goal, the Shanghai factory undoubtedly needs to operate at full speed.
The Tesla Shanghai factory is known for its high level of automation, and this report further confirms this point. According to the report, in the Tesla final assembly workshop, two production lines with similar processes are vertically stacked and arranged, with vertical lifts used to transport parts such as doors and bodies on the production line, saving nearly a hundred meters of production line space. The four workshops are interconnected, allowing manufactured parts to be transferred within the workshops. A large number of robotic arms bring Tesla up to 95% automation in production, with an automation rate close to 100% in the welding workshop.
In addition, Grace Tao, Vice President of Tesla, revealed in an interview that the progress of the Megafactory project in Shanghai is proceeding smoothly. It is scheduled to be completed by 2025. The factory will mainly produce Tesla’s flagship energy storage product Megapack.
