Last month there was news that the Tesla Shanghai Megafactory is planned to start construction in May this year, and production is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2025. This will be Tesla’s first Megafactory project outside of the United States.
The Office of the Management Committee of Lingang New Area, China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone recently issued the “Decision on Administrative Licensing Approval for the Construction Plan of Tesla Megafactory Project Related to River in South Fengjie River Management Area”, approving the construction plan related to Tesla’s Megafactory project reported by Tesla (Shanghai) within the management scope of Nanfengjie River.
According to the introduction, the project is located in Nanhui New Town, Pudong New Area, with its eastern boundary at plot N01-08 and western boundary at production protection green space N01-05. It extends south to Canghai Road and north to Wanshui Road, covering an area of 204359.92 square meters.

Previously, Lu Yu, Director of the High-tech Department of the Administration Committee of Lingang New Area, stated at a press conference marking the ‘one-year anniversary’ of the construction of Shanghai’s Future Industrial Leading Zone that Tesla’s energy storage project is expected to complete trial production within this year with a production scale close to 40GWh and will be sold in global markets.
Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory for energy storage will plan to produce Tesla’s Megapack, a large-scale commercial energy storage battery. This product is based on integrated system integration and modular design, helping grid operators, utilities, and others store and distribute renewable energy more efficiently.
Each unit of the Megapack can store over 3.9MWh (megawatt-hours) of energy, enough to meet the one-hour electricity demand of 3600 households.
