Tim Cook Reckons China “the Most Competitive Market in the World”

On May 3rd, Apple released its second-quarter earnings report, with revenues in Greater China totaling $16.372 billion, down 8% compared to $17.812 billion in the same period last year.

In response, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook stated that China is “the most competitive market in the world” and is optimistic about the long-term development of the iPhone in the Chinese market, undeterred by competitors.

Cook said in the earnings call, “In an extremely competitive environment, our iPhone sales in mainland China grew last quarter, which I am very pleased about. I remain very optimistic about the future development of the Chinese market. We are not focused on the development of the next one or two weeks, but more on long-term development.”

In the earnings call, Cook once again emphasized that the best-selling smartphones in Chinese cities are the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

In addition, Cook confirmed that Apple is continuing to work hard in the field of generative AI. He stressed that Apple has adopted a development approach different from other companies, which gives it an “advantage” to “stand out” in the era of AI, and will share “very exciting things” with customers in the near future.

Previous reports claimed that Apple’s first AI feature will run locally on devices, without relying on cloud servers, making Apple’s AI more private and secure than other online services.

Apple plans to provide generative AI on devices, which will require a lot of CPU and GPU capabilities, and plans to focus on AI with the upcoming M4 chip.
