Twitter Tightens Access: Login Needed to View Tweets

Twitter’s new policy, requiring users to sign in to view tweets, has sparked controversy and speculation. The once-public platform now displays a sign-in screen to non-account holders who attempt to view tweets.

This change has led to disappointment among casual users and ‘silent lurkers.’

The policy change was implemented without any official comment from Twitter – a silence that has caused some people to question the motives behind the change.

The decision coincides with a period of turmoil for Twitter, marked by a struggling user base and high-profile management changes.

Lingering Technical Glitches & Controversies

Elon Musk’s tenure as CEO of Twitter was marked by controversy. Following his departure, the platform has been dealing with technical errors along with operational challenges.

Musk has notably clashed with giants such as Microsoft over Twitter data usage, alleging illegal use and even potential lawsuits.

Despite the recent significant shift in Twitter’s leadership, with Linda Yaccarino taking over as CEO, the influence of former CEO Elon Musk continues to profoundly shape the platform’s operations.

Not to mention rivals like Post, Hive, Bluesky, and Mastodon have gained a lot of recent traction.

Yaccarino has been left to deal with the fallout of Musk’s contentious tenure. This includes a series of unresolved technical issues.

Only this week, a significant number of users received notifications of a three-day suspension due to purported spam activity. The cause remains unknown, with Twitter remaining silent about the incident.

Under Musk’s leadership, the platform experienced frequent policy changes and technical glitches. This led to mounting uncertainty amongst users, and the latest change has only added to their unease.

Potential Consequences & New Moves

This new restriction on tweet visibility could have significant repercussions for the platform. If tweets are not publicly accessible, search engine algorithms may rank Twitter’s content lower.

This could potentially reduce site traffic directed from search engines like Google. On top of that, the user experience could suffer, with individuals finding the change ‘annoying’ and possibly discouraging further engagement.

Even though users are not content, this move can result in more new Twitter accounts.

Moreover, Musk’s known concerns about AI tools accessing Twitter data could also be a contributing factor. As he has pointedly remarked in the past, “They trained illegally using Twitter data. Lawsuit time.”

While the intentions behind Twitter’s latest policy change are unclear, the implications are evident.

It could potentially alienate non-account holders, impacting site traffic and engagement. On the flip side, it might also spur silent observers to create accounts, boosting the platform’s user base. Only recently, Twitter announced the purging of inactive Twitter accounts. It seems like Musk is trying to get the bird app buzzing again with more active users.

As Twitter moves forward under Yaccarino’s leadership, users will keenly observe the platform’s progression.

New integrations have already started to show up. For instance, the platform has announced a new feature for Apple iPhone users that will enable them to browse through Twitter videos when carrying out other tasks.

iSoftware Updates, an information hub for the latest Apple software updates and iOS signing statuses, recently shared a video. They introduced a forthcoming feature that would enable users to watch Twitter videos in Picture-in-Picture mode.

How these changes affect the platform’s trajectory is yet to be seen. However, one thing is certain – with such high stakes, the Twitter of today is sailing in uncharted waters.
