The Zeiss super-telephoto camera and the fast 50 MP main camera of the Vivo X100 Pro flex their muscles in numerous sample photos. Vivo places great emphasis on the portrait and night modes as well as the quality of the macro camera.

The Vivo X100 and X100 Pro were officially unveiled in mid-November and were primarily intended to impress with a first-class camera system. In the top model, this consists of a 50 MP f/2.0 ultra-wide-angle camera with a sensor in 1/2.76 inch format, a 50 MP f/1.75 main camera with a Sony IMX988 in 1/0.98 inch format, and a 50 MP f/2.5 periscope telephoto camera with 1/2 inch sensor, 4.3x zoom and OIS.

All three cameras have a high-quality Zeiss lens with T* lens coating; the telephoto camera even has an apochromatically corrected lens and supports macro mode. This is a special feature, as the macro function is integrated into the ultra-wide-angle camera on almost all competitors, apart from the newer Huawei flagships. This macro camera is one of the highlights of the latest sample photos published by Vivo, Ice Universe and Kartikey Singh.

Leaker Ice Universe compared the macro mode with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which has the macro function integrated into its ultra-wide-angle camera. As the comparison shows, the Vivo X100 Pro not only gets much closer to the subject and captures it more sharply thanks to the 50 MP sensor, the macro photos also show much less image noise, while the white balance for portraits works more precisely in some cases.

Vivo’s marketing also focuses on the night and portrait modes. Landscape shots at night are colorful and have relatively little image noise, while portrait shots display accurate bokeh effects. Vivo also demonstrates some of the lens simulations optimized by Zeiss, which adjust the coloring and the look of the bokeh. As usual, sample photos shared by manufacturers should be viewed as best-case examples; detailed tests will soon provide more extensive comparisons of the Vivo X100 Pro’s cameras.

Growing up in regional Australia, I first became acquainted with computers in my early teens after a broken leg from a football (soccer) match temporarily condemned me to a predominately indoor lifestyle. Soon afterwards I was building my own systems. Now I live in Germany, having moved here in 2014, where I study philosophy and anthropology. I am particularly fascinated by how computer technology has fundamentally and dramatically reshaped human culture, and how it continues to do so.
