As several regions across India endure a relentless heatwave, sporadic showers and thunderstorms are causing flight disruptions and bringing temporary relief to some areas. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of an impending heatwave set to grip Northwest India from May 16.

According to the IMD, the heatwave will impact:
– West Rajasthan from May 15 to 18
– West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, East Rajasthan, and South Haryana from May 16 to 18
– East Uttar Pradesh on May 16 and 17
– Northwest Madhya Pradesh and Bihar on May 17 and 18
Additionally, hot and humid weather will persist in Saurashtra and Kutch over the next five days.
South peninsular India is expected to experience heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds until May 17. The southwest monsoon is anticipated to advance into the South Andaman Sea, parts of the Southeast Bay of Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands around May 19.
As per reports, heatwave conditions will intensify in the northern plains, including Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi/NCR, with temperatures peaking between May 17 and 19. The mercury is expected to reach 44°C in many areas, potentially triggering ‘loo’ conditions. Cities such as Amritsar, Jalandhar, Bathinda, and several others are likely to be affected. Some regions may record temperatures above 45°C, with Delhi poised to experience its first heat wave of the season as temperatures reach 44°C.
The IMD forecasts light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra until May 18. Gujarat, Bihar, and Jharkhand are also expected to see light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms on Tuesday.

If reports are to go by, Gujarat and Mumbai experienced strong winds and heavy showers on Monday, which significantly disrupted daily life. Roads were waterlogged, causing traffic jams, and public transportation faced delays and cancellations. In response to the ongoing severe weather, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, warning residents to brace for more heavy rain and strong winds in the coming days.
Gujarat is expected to continue facing adverse weather conditions, with forecasts predicting light rains and thunderstorms across several districts over the next three days. Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of unpredictable weather.
