Cyclone Remal update: Northeast receives heavy rainfall; many flights cancelled

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Arunachal Pradesh due to anticipated heavy rainfall. With regard to this, Chief Minister Pema Khandu has also urged residents to take necessary precautions and avoid vulnerable areas.

The IMD forecasts thunderstorms with lightning and extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places across several districts, including Papum Pare, East Kameng, West Kameng, and Pakke-Kessang. The Chief Minister stressed the importance of heeding official advisories and reaching out to district administrations in case of emergencies.

If reports are to go by, in Assam, the aftermath of Cyclone Remal has prompted heightened alertness, with several districts bracing for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. The cyclone, which made landfall in neighboring West Bengal and Bangladesh, is now affecting Assam’s weather conditions too. Referring to this, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured preparedness, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) on standby.

A red alert has been issued for Chirang, Baksa, Goalpara, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj districts, indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Dhubri, South Salmara, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Tamulpur, Barpeta, Nalbari, Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, and West Karbi Anglong in Assam. The weather office predicts squally winds ranging from 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph expected over South Assam and Meghalaya on Monday.

Reports add that control rooms have been activated, and the administration has set up helpline numbers for assistance. The IMD has issued warnings of extremely heavy rainfall and squally winds, prompting red and orange alerts in various districts.

Precautionary measures have been taken to address potential hazards, including the deployment of NDRF teams, standby personnel from Fire and Emergency Services, and desiltation of major river channels by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC).

Cyclone Remal update: Northeast receives heavy rainfall; many flights cancelled

Anticipatory evacuations are being considered for vulnerable populations in landslide-prone areas. Flight cancellations have been announced at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) in Guwahati due to adverse weather conditions forecasted by the IMD.

The IMD’s cautionary advice extends to the entire northeastern region, urging preparedness for Cyclone Remal’s impact, expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds. The safety of residents remains a priority, with authorities coordinating efforts to mitigate potential risks and ensure timely responses to emergencies. As the situation evolves, continued vigilance and adherence to official guidance are essential to safeguard lives and property in the face of adverse weather conditions.
