This year, the SEC just means more. More teams, more players, more firsts.
And first up for Oklahoma is Tennessee. The two will face off in Week 4 of the college football, marking a historic weekend in Norman. The Sooners will host the Volunteers for just the second time, the fifth all-time matchup between the programs.
Last time the two faced off, 2015, Oklahoma got a double-overtime win. It wouldn’t be surprising if that’s repeated in 2024.
After going 11-2 in 2022, Josh Heupel’s second season at the helm, the Vols failed to improve, losing four games in 2023. This year will be a new challenge offensively, too, as Joe Milton III’s departure means Nico Iamaleava will fully take over as quarterback. The redshirt freshman has a lot to live up to.
The Sooners have quarterback questions to answer, too. Dillon Gabriel helped Oklahoma and Brent Venables make waves in 2023, going 10-2 in the regular season with a win over Texas. He won’t be there to go for a more, though, transferring to Oregon during the offseason. Jackson Arnold, who took over for the Sooners’ Alamo Bowl game against Arizona, is set to be the go-to guy.
In a tough SEC, Tennessee and Oklahoma need to be on their A-game for a chance at the expanded playoffs. Their matchup will tell how high the ceiling for success is.
