MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said that building more cell towers is the key to improving internet service especially for households.
DICT Undersecretary Paul Joseph Mercado said that a dense network of cell towers is crucial for optimal internet connectivity.
Mercado explained that the required density of cell towers varies with the technology used.
“For example, 5G technology necessitates closely spaced cell towers, while older technologies like 2G and 3G require fewer towers,” he said.
DICT Spokesman Aboy Paraiso said that coverage also depends on the proximity of cell towers.

“It depends on their radius. If more (towers) are within the radius, these can cover over 4,000 households,” he said.
To improve connectivity, the DICT is considering building more cell sites this year. Paraiso said that to provide better internet, over 30,000 new cell sites will be needed.
The agency said there are only 12,000 independent common cell towers, with the majority owned by private telecommunications companies.
The Private Sector Advisory Council had previously requested P240 billion to upgrade internet infrastructure and P60 billion annually for the DICT to lease towers and build facilities. The government allocated only P16.1 billion for these purposes.
