Following yesterday’s report on The Digital Bits, retail giant Best Buy has confirmed that it will phase out selling DVDs, Blu-rays and 4K Ultra HD discs both in stores and online in early 2024.
Variety scored the confirmation statement from the company, adding that according to their sources Best Buy made the decision to quit selling these video disc formats up to nine months ago.
Best Buy will continue to sell movies and TV shows on physical discs through the holiday shopping season online and in stores this year before removing their stock in the new year. Physical video game sales will not be affected by this decision.
In a statement to the trade paper, a spokesperson for the retailer says:
“To state the obvious, the way we watch movies and TV shows is much different today than it was decades ago. Making this change gives us more space and opportunity to bring customers new and innovative tech for them to explore, discover, and enjoy.”
The news arrives just weeks after Netflix mailed out its final DVDs to customers, and Disney Australia opted to stop releasing DVDs, Blu-rays and 4K UHD titles in that market.
