5 Reasons the UAE Placed a Visa Ban on Nigeria
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) sent shockwaves through Nigeria when it imposed a visa ban on Nigerians and several other African countries in October 2022. This move came shortly after Emirates Airlines suspended flights to Nigeria, plunging travelers into uncertainty.

While the ban on Nigerian visas has been lifted as of September 11, 2023, the incident has sparked discussions about Nigeria’s global reputation and its impact on international relations. In this article, we will highlight some key reasons behind the UAE’s decision to place a visa ban on Nigeria and the subsequent developments that led to its lifting. Let’s dive in.

Failure to Repatriate Trapped Funds

One of the primary reasons behind the UAE’s visa ban on Nigerians was Nigeria’s inability to repatriate billions of dollars in trapped funds. Dubai’s Emirates airline suspended flight operations to Nigeria, citing Abuja’s failure to send approximately $85 million in revenue back to the UAE. These funds were blocked in Nigeria due to dollar shortages, creating a significant financial dispute between the two nations. This financial issue played a crucial role in straining diplomatic relations and contributed to the imposition of the visa ban.

Negative global reputation

Nigeria’s negative global reputation has long been a concern, with allegations of fraud and other criminal activities tarnishing its image. While diplomatic tensions had been simmering between Nigeria and the UAE for months before the ban, speculations arose that the UAE’s decision was, in part, a response to the country’s international reputation. Reports of fraudulent activities involving Nigerians abroad, as well as instances of “bad behavior” by some Nigerians in the UAE, may have fueled concerns about national security, leading to the visa ban.

Diplomatic disputes on flight operations

Before the visa ban, Nigeria and the UAE had been entangled in a series of diplomatic disputes. These disputes ranged from issues related to flight operations to disagreements over visa rules and financial matters. The ongoing disputes escalated tensions between the two nations and likely contributed to the UAE’s decision to impose visa restrictions on Nigerian travelers.

Cancelled flights and reduced operations

Diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and the UAE escalated in 2021 when the Nigerian government reduced the frequency of Emirates Airlines’ flight operations in Nigeria from 21 flights per week to just one. Nigeria claimed this was in retaliation for the UAE government reducing the operations of Nigeria’s indigenous carrier, Air Peace, from three flights per week to one. In response, Emirates ceased all operations in Nigeria for several weeks, further straining their relations.

Incidents of Misbehavior

Reports of Nigerians behaving badly in the UAE, such as the viral tweet showing Nigerians held in a room at a Dubai airport, sparked concerns about public order and security. While the Nigerian government stated that the affected individuals had tried to circumvent new UAE visa rules, videos and reports of Nigerian rival cult groups clashing in Dubai further exacerbated the situation. These incidents of “bad behavior” may have prompted the UAE to tighten visa rules and impose restrictions on Nigerian travelers.
