GST Council Latest News LIVE: GST Council to meet today; deliberations set to focus on online gaming regulations, tribunals

The 50th meeting of the GST Council is set to be held today in the national capital. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman – the head of the Council – will chair the meeting.

ANI reports that the Group of Ministers (GoM) report on online gaming, casino and horse racing along with proposed taxation is expected to be up for deliberation.

The report suggests there has been no consensus among GoM members for taxing online gaming at a flat 28 per cent.

Besides online gaming, the Council is also expected to discuss and finalise the constitution of a GST Tribunal and its benches. The rules and regulations related to tribunals may also be finalised tomorrow, the sources added.

The 49th meeting of the Council was held on February 18, 2023. The meeting took several decisions including adopting the report of the Group of Ministers (GoM) on the GST Appellate Tribunal with certain modifications.

The 48th Meeting of the GST Council was held on December 17, 2022, through video conferencing.

Goods and Services Tax was introduced in the country with effect from July 1, 2017, and states were assured compensation for loss of any revenue arising on account of its implementation as per the provisions of the GST (Compensation to States) Act, 2017 for a period of five years.

For providing compensation to States, Cess was being levied on certain goods and the amount of Cess collected was being credited to Compensation Fund. The compensation to States was being paid out of the Compensation Fund with effect from July 1, 2017.

Biden to meet Ukrainian counterpart Zelenskyy at NATO summit

US President Joe Biden will meet with Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit on Wednesday, CNN reported citing an official familiar with the meeting.

The meeting between Biden and Zelenskyy will mark a sign of unity as the Ukrainian President’s presence at the summit had been in question, according to CNN. The Russia-Ukraine conflict is among the team agenda items for NATO leaders along with discussing a future pathway for Ukraine to become a member of military alliance, the report said.

Ukraine will dominate the NATO summit scheduled to be held in Vilnius as Biden looks to keep the military alliance united behind Kyiv amid the ongoing conflict with Moscow. The alliance is facing questions regarding a potential path to NATO membership for Ukraine and additional military assistance, according to CNN.

Last week, Biden said he doesn’t think Ukraine is ready for NATO membership and added that NATO is a process that takes some time to meet all qualifications, from democratization to a whole range of other issues.

Yamuna flows over danger mark at 206.24 mm

The water level of the Yamuna, which breached the danger mark of 205.33 metres earlier on Monday, triggering an Orange alert, was recorded at 206.24 on Tuesday, according to data shared by the Flood Control Department in the national capital.

Earlier, the water level of the Yamuna at the Old Railway Bridge was recorded at 206.04 mm at 11 pm on Monday. While the areas in the city continued to face water-logging due to incessant rains on Saturday and Sunday and a fresh spell of rainfall on Monday.

The record rainfall in the national capital has impacted all sections, including the poor, the daily wagers and those commuting to reach their destinations. While families around the Yamuna living in hutments will have to shift in case water level rises further, rainwater also entered the homes of some civil servants.

The plight of locals across the societal divide has only served to reinforce the fact that the floods, this year, have hit the poor as well as the powerful.

IMD issues fresh ‘Red’ and ‘Orange’ alerts in Himachal for next 24 hours

There appears to be no immediate respite in the offiing for Himachal Pradesh, which has been battered by rains over the last few days, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD), on Tuesday, issued “red” and “orange” alerts for several districts of the hill-state for the next 24 hours.

“A red alert has been issued for very heavy rainfall in Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Kullu, Mandi, Kinnaur, and Lahaul for the next 24 hours. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued in Una, Hamirpur, Kangra, and Chamba. A flash flood warning has been issued for Mandi, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti for the next 24 hours,” said senior IMD Scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma on Monday.

Former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Jairam Thakur on Monday said the state recorded unprecented rains in the past few days, adding that he was concerned over the loss of lives and damage to public infrastructure.

Thakur, who is now the Leader of the Opposition in the Himachal Assembly, told ANI that Himachal Pradesh had “not seen such rain in its history” as over 12 major bridges have been damaged.

Indian-American Geeta Rao Gupta sworn in as Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues

US Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday swore in Indian-American Geeta Rao Gupta as the Ambassador at Large for Global Women’s Issues in the State Department.

Gupta was confirmed by the US Senate by 51 to 47 votes for the position in May, this year.

According to Gupta, there are many inequities and indignities that women suffer around the world, which hold them back from participating fully in the economy.

“They are subject to threats to their safety and have a fear of violence even on a daily basis, and that determines their mobility. In situations of conflict and emergencies and humanitarian crises they are particularly vulnerable, both in terms of their safety but also in terms of their being able to look after their families and feed their families,” she said during her confirmation hearing last year.

Describing herself as a “first-generation immigrant,” she said, “I belong to a family of professional women, each of whom dedicated their lives to serving their communities and from a family of men who supported them fully.”

Bastille Day welcome for Modi as France courts India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is guest of honour Friday for Bastille Day celebrations in France, the latest Western power to court the world’s largest democracy and its booming economy.

President Emmanuel Macron’s red carpet welcome comes weeks after Modi was given the rare honour of a White House state dinner in Washington — a city he was once banned from visiting.

That visit saw deals on arms sales, semiconductor investment and space cooperation, breezing past human rights concerns over India’s Hindu nationalist government and accusations of rising religious intolerance towards the country’s Muslim minority.

Further strategic and economic tie-ups are expected in Paris, which is seeking to broaden its engagement in Asia alongside other Western nations to check growing Chinese assertiveness in the region.

Modi’s visit alongside Indian troops joining the annual Bastille Day military parade, marks “a new phase in the strategic partnership between France and India”, Macron’s Elysee Palace office said in June.

US welcomes role of India in helping achieve lasting peace in Ukraine

The United States has welcomed the role of India in helping achieve lasting peace in Ukraine, a senior administration official said Monday.

“A strategic failure for Russia, which has seen an enormous loss of both military personnel, but military equipment. It’s seen its standing in the world affected. It’s seen its economy crippled by the sanctions and export controls we’ve imposed,” Matthew Miller, Spokesperson of the State Department told reporters at a news conference here.

“I will say with respect to what other countries of the world can do, we welcome the international support that Ukraine has received since the beginning of this conflict,” he said in response to a question.

NATO chief says Turkiye agrees to send Sweden’s NATO accession protocol to Parliament swiftly

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg says Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has agreed to send Sweden’s NATO accession protocol to the Turkish Parliament “as soon as possible.”

Stoltenberg made the announcement after talks with Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on the eve of a NATO summit in Lithuania.

Sweden’s NATO accession has been held up by objections from Turkiye since last year.

Gorakhpur man held for threatening to kill Modi, Adityanath on helpline

A 45-year-old man has been detained from Gorakhpur for allegedly threatening to kill Prime Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aditynath calling the UP-112 helpline, police said on Monday.

Deoria Kotwali SHO DK Mishra said the call was made late Sunday night to the UP-112 helpline number by a man who introduced himself as Arun Kumar, a resident of Bhujauli Colony of the city.

Police traced the location of the mobile to Devrad village of Harpur Budhat in Gorakhpur district, which led them to one Sanjay Kumar, who was apprehended Monday morning, the SHO said.

Police found that Kumar was drunk when he made the call.

Centre’s Article 370 affidavit in SC holds no legal value, only political, claim Mehbooba, Omar

Former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah on Monday criticised the Centre’s affidavit in the Supreme Court on the abrogation of Article 370 saying it lacked logic and had on constitutional backing.

“The Centre’s defence lacks logic … (is) illegal & unconstitutional abrogation of Article 370,” PDP President Mehbooba Mufti said in a tweet.

“Brute majority was used to subvert the Indian constitution that extended guarantees to the people of J&K & GOI also violated earlier rulings of Hon’ble SC which held that only J&K’s constituent assembly could recommend the removal of Article 370 to the President of India,” she said.

The once-BJP ally also said that “drum beating about an enforced silence” in the region cannot be used to “justify constitutional harakiri.”

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah also took to Twitter saying the arguments put forth by the government were political and had little in the way of legality.

J-K highway remains shut, no pilgrims batch to leave Jammu for Amarnath

Authorities said the Amarnath Yatra will remain suspended as no batch of pilgrims will leave Jammu for Kashmir on Tuesday in the wake of closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.

“No fresh batch will leave Jammu for Kashmir for their onward journey to Amarnath cave shrine. The yatra will remain suspended”, a senior officer told PTI here.

This is being done in view of the closure of the highway for undertaking work for complete restoration of damaged stretches.
