New Shows And Movies To Stream This Weekend On Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+ And More

What to stream this weekend.

The weekend is here, and what a weekend it is! Not a ton of new shows, but it’s San Diego Comic-Con weekend, so we should be learning some new and exciting things about comics and video games all weekend long.

We won’t learn much about upcoming movies or TV shows since the SAG-AGTRA and WGA strikes have essentially ground all of that to a total halt.

There’s not a ton of new stuff this weekend, but I link to all the ongoing shows below as well. Also, I can’t say what it is just yet—it’s a secret!—but there will be a surprise release of a show this weekend that nobody is expecting. So stay tuned. I’ll update this post and post about this surprise show here on my blog as well as on Twitter or Facebook. Stay tuned . . . .

Alright, let’s dive right in!

Special Ops: Lioness — Paramount+

Yet another Taylor Sheridan series on Paramount (I think the count is up to like 400 different Sheridan shows at this point) this time starring Zoe Saldaña as CIA operative Joe alongside Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman. Joe is part of a program code-named Lioness run by Kidman’s character, Kaitlyn Meade, and is part of an effort to stop a major terrorist attack. I’ve been looking for another good spy/military/thriller style show and this might punch that ticket. It also has Laysla De Oliveira who played a very, very creepy-but-alluring character on Locke & Key.

Full Circle (Max)

I almost started this bizarre looking kidnapping drama but then I ended up watching Justified: City Primeval (also starring Timothy Olpyhant) instead. And then Dead City and I went to a couple different movies and binged some other shows I’m reviewing. So I haven’t gotten to this one yet. But I will! It sounds crazy.

Foundation — Season 2 (Apple TV+)

I’ve heard so many mixed things about this show. Someday I swear I’ll watch it! I’ve just had so many things to watch lately! Big budget space opera is always fun, though, so I know I’ll get there one day.

Justified: City Primeval (Hulu)

Raylan Givens is back, which means more Timothy Olyphant awesomeness, though sadly no Walter Goggins. No Boyd Crowder. Still, I mostly enjoyed the first two episodes of this show on Hulu (read my review here) and I’m excited to see where the story takes us!

The Walking Dead: Dead City

I’m currently working on my Dead City finale review and a review of the whole season, which got progressively better and better with each episode and really hits its stride in the sixth (and final) episode of the season. Absolutely by far the best Walking Dead we’ve seen in years.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Yep, nope. Still haven’t started this show. I’m a terrible human being. It looks great. It’s at the top of my list! I promise!

Hijack (Apple TV)

The always-excellent Idris Elba stars in Apple TV’s new thriller Hijack, about a plane taken over by terrorists on a seven-hour flight to London, and the expert negotiator onboard who uses his wits to try to save everyone from disaster.

Outlander (Starz)

Still behind on this one also, but Outlander is genuinely a really good show with wonderful characters and I aim to catch up soon, Sassenach.

In Theaters

I’ve started adding this final ‘In Theaters’ section since I’ve been going to a lot of movies lately and would like to offer up my recommendations and share my reviews.

Oppenheimer — I enjoyed Christopher Nolan’s new Oppenheimer biopic. It’s beautifully shot and has a very dreamlike quality to it in many ways. Still, I found it too long and too disjointed, and far and away my least favorite Nolan picture in a long time. Read my review here.

Barbie — I just saw this one and haven’t written a review yet. I’ll link to it in an update when I post. I thought it was charming. It’s definitely pushing the “feminist agenda” or whatever, but I think it does so in a clever way that’s mostly a lot of fun. And it’s a Barbie movie. It’s supposed to have a positive message about female empowerment! Ryan Gosling really steals the show, however.

Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny — I haven’t seen this one yet but I think I’m going to go this weekend. A part of me is really excited for more Indiana Jones; a part of me is dreading what I felt when I went to Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. But I think I need to go see it one way or another and find out for myself.

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 — One of the best action movies I’ve seen in a long, long time chock full of crazy stunts and exciting set-pieces. This one is both hilarious and emotionally powerful. You can read my review here.

Asteroid City — A surprisingly divisive film, even among Wes Anderson fans. I found it absolutely delightful in all the right ways, and one of the more emotionally powerful Anderson films, though I’m still not entirely sure why it moved me so. Read my review here.

The Flash — While I really did enjoy parts of this superhero flick—and Ezra Miller and Michael Keaton are both great—overall it was yet another DC dud. I think I enjoyed it more than I was expecting simply because my expectations were so low. Read my review here.

What are you all watching these days? Any recommendations?
