This Upgrade Brings The Latest Tech To Our Kitchen

The LG Studio 27 cubic foot fridge

LG

After the water dispenser in our old Maytag fridge decided to perpetually stay on, we were forced to disconnect its water line from the wall. The repair probably would’ve been costly to the 2010-circa model, but even the appliance experts couldn’t figure out what was causing it. So we opted to get a new model. And so far, we are thrilled with our new LG Studio French Door model.

Honestly, had I known what we’ve been missing with respect to the latest technology, I would have made the upgrade a long time ago. First of all, the LG has the identical exterior size to our previous fridge but significantly more storage capacity on the inside. My wife and I both noticed immediately that we can probably fit an additional 25 percent of groceries inside the LG that officially has a 27 cubic foot capacity. And there are plenty of drawers and shelves to keep everything organized.

The second advantage here is that the water dispenser is inside on the left – as opposed to built into the door like our previous model. It’s streamlined and very subtle. As a result, the front of the door is flat and sleek, looking more flush with our counters. I hated in the old model that the door dispenser sprayed water everywhere – even when it was working properly – and dropped ice cubes constantly onto the floor. The LG’s ice tray is in the bottom drawer freezer, and I can finally control how many ice cubes I want to use in a drink rather than be force-fed them through the door where my drink would often splash from too many cubes flying out of the chute.

And this new model is amazingly quiet. The only sound we hear – albeit faintly – is the ice maker every now and then producing more cubes. Plus it has an “ice plus” function that lets us ramp up cube production if we’re about to have a houseful of guests. My wife was initially concerned that the fridge would lose its coolness every time we opened the door to get water, but there’s thankfully a “Door Cooling+” vent in the top of the fresh food section that helps maintain a cold interior whenever the doors open by blasting cool air to all areas, helping maintain consistent temperatures from top to bottom. Another feature that’s great for our home is that the appliance will subtly ding whenever you leave the door open for too long, which we tend to do by accident. So this is a welcome reminder to close it.

In fact, the digital control panel is sleekly embedded just inside the right when you open the door. My only problem with the fridge is that since the interior is all charcoal gray metal, the controls on that panel are nearly impossible to read. I had to hold a flashlight up to it in the first few days, just to set everything the way we wanted it. And even then, we couldn’t really read everything. But obviously once everything is set, you don’t really ever need to do that again.

This model is compatible with the LG ThinQ smartphone app that lets us control exact temperatures of the freezer and fridge, monitor the fridge efficiency, etc. via WiFi. It all sounds great, but our kitchen is the one WiFi dead spot zone in the house. So I wasn’t able to put that to the test. We ordered the smudge-resistant matte Essence White model, which looks fantastic with all of our white cabinets.

I’m particularly curious to see how the better-than-average energy efficiency of this “Energy Star Qualified” model that LG touts on the yellow card that comes with the machine jives in real life with our electric bill. My guess is it will likely lower our bill, thanks to the technology inside of the machine. In fact, the fridge uses LED panels inside to provide an exceptionally bright interior and save energy over traditional lighting. When you open the doors, you can see the lights gain brightness.

Perhaps the biggest surprise for me so far has been now that I’ve experienced this refrigerator for two weeks, I didn’t realize how bad we had it with our old unit. The LG Studio has set a completely new and elevated benchmark.
