In a bold move that signals increasing international interest in Nigeria’s automotive industry, a UK-based company has announced its intention to set up a car assembly plant in the country, offering competitive discounts.
This development positions the UK firm as a direct competitor to established local brands like Innoson Motors.
The announcement comes on the heels of a significant milestone achieved by the Chinese car manufacturing company, CIG, in partnership with the Lagos State government.

The Chinese Car manufacturing company celebrated the assembly of their first 2000 vehicles in the Ogba area of Lagos on the 24th of October, 2023.
This assembly plant, the first of its kind by a Chinese company in Lagos, underscores the state’s ambition to become an industrial hub.
During a visit to the plant, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu lauded CIG for its pioneering efforts in the state. He emphasized that such ventures not only bolster the state’s economy but also create job opportunities for its residents.
Highlighting the assembly of the 2000 vehicles as a testament to the potential of international collaborations, Sanwo-Olu expressed his administration’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to more such investments. He envisions Lagos as a beacon of industrialization and innovation in the coming years.
How it all started
Daina Chen, the chairman of CIG Motors, shed light on the company’s journey, which began in 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. It was then that the state and the company inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish the assembly plant. With a capacity to assemble over 50,000 vehicles, Chen revealed plans to ramp up production to 5,000 units.
Nigeria’s automotive landscape is rapidly evolving. With homegrown brands like Innoson Motors and Dangote Sinotruck already making their mark, the country is emerging as a significant player in the African automotive sector.
Earlier this year, the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) showcased its commitment to sustainable transportation by procuring locally-made electric vehicles from the Nigerian tech firm, Jet Motors.
With the UK firm’s entry, the Nigerian automotive industry is set for a competitive shake-up, promising consumers more choices and potentially better deals.
