17 Famous People Who’ve Gotten Seriously Injured At Their Own Concerts
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

During a show, Patti Smith was dancing so hard that she fell off the stage into the concrete 14 feet below her. She fractured her skull, injured several vertebrae, broke some teeth, and lost some of her eyesight.

This past weekend, while Bebe Rexha was performing, a fan threw a phone at her, and she fell to the ground. She left the stage and later revealed she had a black eye and needed stitches from the injury.

And Bebe isn’t the only one — sometimes live performances can be incredibly dangerous for fans and performers alike. Here are 16 more celebs who’ve gotten injured at their own shows:

1.

In 2012, Lady Gaga was accidentally hit in the head by a metal prop piece during a show in New Zealand. She promptly left the stage to assess the injury, and then came back saying, “I want to apologize, I did hit my head, and I think I may have a concussion. But don’t you worry, I will finish this show.”

2.

During a show, Enrique Iglesias reached for a flying camera drone so that he could film the audience, but he accidentally grabbed the wrong part of the device and severely cut up his hand and fingers. He ended up finishing the show, but with his hand wrapped up in a bloody T-shirt.

A statement on his website later explained that, “He suffered a fracture that needed to be corrected in addition to the reconstructive surgery.”

3.

Ava Max was recently slapped by a fan who jumped onstage at one of her shows. In a tweet after the performance, she said, “He slapped me so hard that he scratched the inside of my eye. He’s never coming to a show again.”

4.

Back in 1971, The Mothers of Invention’s lead singer Frank Zappa was attacked onstage and thrown into the pit. Frank was left unconscious, and several fans (and bandmates) truly believed that he was dead. He later recalled the experience, saying, “My head was over on my shoulder, and my neck was bent like it was broken. I had a gash in my chin, a hole in the back of my head, a broken rib, and a fractured leg. One arm was paralyzed.”

At the time, the attacker claimed Frank was “making eyes” at his girlfriend.

5.

Rapper Killer Mike tore his shoulder while trying to protect his Run the Jewels partner El-P after a fan tried to attack them onstage. A doctor told Killer Mike to cancel the rest of the tour to rest, but he refused, saying, “I was like, ‘Doctor, I’m not leaving the road — the tour goes on!’”

6.

During a show back in 2015, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl fell off the stage and broke his leg. He reappeared onstage later to say, “I may not be able to walk or run, but I can still play guitar and scream.”

7.

Metallica’s James Hetfield was severely burned after stepping over one of the band’s pyrotechnic canisters. The person operating the device didn’t realize where James was standing, a “big colored flame” came up, and James was “completely engulfed.” Remembering the experience, James told VH1, “I’m burnt. My arm, my hand, completely down to the bone. The side of my face. Hair’s gone. Part of my back. I watched the skin just rising, all these things going wrong.”

Bassist Jason Newsted said, “If he had been breathing in, he would have been dead.” And the band’s bass tech Zach Harmon shared, “I ran over and saw him holding his arm with his skin coming off.”

8.

During a Slipknot performance, Clown (aka Shawn Crahan) slammed his face into a mic stand, which resulted in him splitting his face open. Bandmate Corey Taylor remembered watching as Clown lifted up his mask and seeing blood “shooting out of his eyeball.” He added that Clown needed a “ridiculous amount” of stitches for the injury.

9.

Kesha once accidentally electrocuted her “vagina” during a performance. She explained that during the show she wanted to use “power tools and show sparks and magic,” but at one show, she “started getting electrocuted while [she] was grinding on [her] vagina.” She added, “It was super scary and intense.”

10.

During a One Direction performance, Liam Payne fell and twisted his knee. The fall was so bad that Niall Horan and Zayn Malik had to carry Liam back onstage to finish the show.

11.

Pink had to be hospitalized after a mishap with the harness she used for aerial stunts. Before she was fully strapped in, the mechanism yanked her into the air and threw her into the barricade. “I possibly broke something,” she told fans as she ended the show early.

12.

While on tour with the Rolling Stones in the South of France in 1966, Mick Jagger was hit in the face with a chair, and it gave him a black eye. He ended up leaving the concert to go to the hospital and get stitches in his brow bone.

13.

During his One Direction days, Niall Horan had injured his knee and needed to get a major surgery to recover. Months later, a fan threw something onstage and hit his injured knee which caused him so much pain he had to limp off the stage.

14.

5 Seconds of Summer guitarist Michael Clifford suffered severe facial burns after accidentally being set on fire during a show. After the accident, he tweeted, “Sorry I couldn’t finish the encore, but at least I look like two face.”

15.

Grimes was electrocuted during a Dublin show after her earpieces malfunctioned. In a now-deleted tweet, she said, “Dublin! 1 mil apologies that my pedal failed and I was electrocuted, but there r tears in my eyes that y’all were so so wonderful.”

16.

Finally, Patti Smith fell offstage in the middle of a performance because she was “spinning like a dervish.” She ended up falling 14 feet and onto concrete. She recalled the accident, saying, “It was a bad fall. I fractured my skull, several vertebrae in my neck, my back, my tailbone. I broke some teeth. It was serious. And I still have certain repercussions — I never got my full eyesight back. I don’t have the range of movement that I used to.”
