It’s all sonic screwdrivers blazing for “Doctor Who” it seems as the new era of the franchise is racing forward.
With today marking ‘Doctor Who Day’ celebrating the 60th anniversary of the franchise, and with the first of the anniversary specials arriving on Saturday, there have been all sorts of going on as part of the celebrations.
First up, showrunner Russell T Davies has teased that even now, months before Ncuti Gatwa’s incoming Fifteenth Doctor gets his first full season of shows on the air sometime in Spring 2024, his second season is already earmarking airdates.
Speaking with RadioTimes.com, Davies says: “If I sound a bit hyper, it’s because I just this morning delivered a Doctor Who script that will be on air in May 2025.”
Production on the second full season of Gatwa’s tenure in the role began last month, so he’s very likely referring to an episode of that run which would suggest a Spring 2025 launch of that season is in the cards.
Gatwa’s first full adventure, titled “The Church at Ruby Road,” will be this year’s Christmas special. However both he and his companion Ruby Sunday (played by Millie Gibson) have popped up all over ‘Who’ celebrations today.
Glimpses of the actors can be seen in several videos released through the official YouTube channels including an overall 60th anniversary reel and a 60 years in 60 seconds tribute.
In addition, a BBC4 screening of the “Adventures in Time and Space” film about the launching of “Doctor Who” in the 1960s saw a key alteration with Matt Smith’s cameo as the character removed and replaced with Gatwa in character.
The 60th anniversary specials kick off this Saturday.
