Ethan Coen’s new comedy-thriller “Drive-Away Dolls” has been delayed from its September 22nd release according to World of Reel.
The film was submitted for the Fall festival circuit, has not chosen a new release date as yet. The site indicates the film was test-screened recently to a “semi-positive audience response”.
‘Dolls’ is said to be a new incarnation of the Russ Meyer-inspired, 1970s exploitation-esque lesbian road trip movie that Coen and co-writer Tricia Cooke penned years ago.
The story centers on two women – Jamie (Margaret Qualley), an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan), who desperately needs to loosen up.
In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way. Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp, Pedro Pascal and Matt Damon also co-star.
This marks the third feature originally slated for September that’s now been pushed due to the ongoing writer’s and actor’s strikes, the other two being Luca Guadagnino’s sexy tennis film “Challengers,” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ darkly comedic period piece “Poor Things”.
All three are relatively smaller releases from acclaimed auteurs. No major studio films slated for September have shifted as yet, including sequels like “The Equalizer 3,” “The Nun II,” “Expend4bles,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” or “Saw X”.
Also still sticking to the month, for now, are Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator,” Kenneth Branagh’s “A Haunting in Venice,” the kid’s film “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” and the GameStop stock film “Dumb Money”.
