Christopher Nolan’s new historical thriller “Oppenheimer” has been lauded for its accuracy and meticulous attention to detail that one comes to expect from a Nolan film.
That doesn’t mean it’s entirely flawless. Fans have discovered a historical error in a scene shortly after the end of World War II when Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) gives a speech to community members in Los Alamos, New Mexico, according to People.
In that scene, plenty of members of the crowd are waving standard American flags used today. The trouble is – that flag is 50 stars, whereas in 1945, the American flag only had 48 stars as Hawaii and Alaska wouldn’t join the union until 1959, and the new flag was not flown until 1960.
It’s noticeable as the 48-star flag has six even rows of eight stars compared to the 50-star flag which is uneven rows of six and five stars.
Making the issue more apparent is that another shot showing Oppenheimer and the flag at a different point in the film includes the appropriate amount of 48 stars.
Cillian Murphy stars in the film as physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer who leads the top-secret Manhattan Project as he and his team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb.
“Oppenheimer” is now playing in cinemas everywhere.
