Landslide in Shimla after heavy rains; rescue operations on for stuck vehicles

In a recent update, parts of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh have suffered major landslides after heavy rains. Because of the landslide, a number of vehicles have been buried, prompting ongoing rescue operations to safely retrieve them. The Southwest monsoon, delayed by five days, finally advanced over Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, as reported by the meteorological office.

Historical data from the Meteorological Department indicates variations in the onset of monsoon in the state over the years. For instance, the earliest arrival was recorded on June 9 in 2000 and the latest on July 5 in 2010. In 2023, the monsoon arrived on June 24, while it was June 29 in 2022, June 13 in 2021, June 24 in 2020, and July 2 in 2019.

Despite the monsoon’s onset, Himachal Pradesh has experienced below-average rainfall, receiving only 39.5 mm against the expected 84.3 mm from June 1 to June 26, marking a deficit of 53 percent across all 12 districts.

The Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert on Thursday for heavy rain, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty winds in 10 districts from June 28 to July 1, excluding Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti. A day before, an orange issue was issued for June 28-29, predicting similar weather conditions and cautioning against potential damage to crops, structures, and disruptions in transportation.

The warnings highlight the potential risks, including damage to agriculture, horticulture, and standing crops, as well as structural and infrastructural disruptions due to strong winds and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

The ongoing rescue efforts in Shimla underscore the challenges posed by the volatile weather conditions, emphasizing the need for proactive measures and preparedness in vulnerable regions during the monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh.

The monsoon in Shimla can bring many challenges. Heavy rainfall often leads to landslides and road blockages, especially on the steep mountainous terrain. The region’s hilly topography makes it susceptible to flash floods, necessitating caution and preparedness among residents and travellers.

Tourism in Shimla during the monsoon season offers a unique experience. While outdoor activities like trekking and nature walks become more challenging due to slippery trails and unpredictable weather, visitors can still enjoy the city’s cultural attractions, shopping at local markets, and savoring Himachali cuisine.
