Mark Goddard, who played the hot-tempered Jupiter 2 pilot Major Don West in the original 1960s CBS series “Lost in Space,” has died at the age of 87.
Goddard passed away Tuesday in Massachusetts from pulmonary fibrosis, THR broke the news after being advised of his death by his third wife Evelyn Pezzulich.
Goddard was a regular on shows “Johnny Ringo” and “The Detectives” when he was approached about Irwin Allen’s “Lost in Space”. The series revolves around the Robinson family, a pilot and a stowaway whose space colonization mission goes awry and leaves them lost.
Goddard was advised nobody would see the series, but surprisingly it turned into a hit that lasted 83 episodes over three seasons in the late 1960s.
Goddard also appeared in several films like “The Monkey’s Uncle,” “A Rage to Live” and “The Love-Ins” along with consistent TV work including key roles in “One Life to Live” and “General Hospital”.
He also a cameo in the 1998 feature adaptation of “Lost in Space” in which Matt LeBlanc took on his role. Ignacio Serricchio played his character in the more recent Netflix reboot from 2018-2021.
