Mortal Kombat 1 is one of the hottest fighting releases of the year, but what about its competitive side? Most of the biggest fighting games have their own circuits, but so far MK 1 has just had scattershot tournaments. That’s changing now. We’ve just learnt about the MK 1 Pro Kompetition. It’s a new esports circuit for the title that’s kicking off with East Coast Throwdown.
The MK 1 Pro Kompetition will be an overarching circuit with offline and online qualifiers. It’ll finish up with a grand finale where we see the very best players competing together. This is how it’s going to work.
The Mortal Kombat 1 Pro Kompetition will kick off with its first qualifier at East Coast Throwdown. This event will be more than a one-off tournament, it’ll instead put players onto an ongoing leaderboard. Between then and the final, we’ll see another 10 online regionals take place, plus a last-chance qualifier. Other in-person events will contribute to this leaderboard too with the best-performing players making it all the way through to the final.
The Grand Finals themselves are still a bit more mysterious. NeverRealm Studios is yet to release the full ruleset or a breakdown for how the points work. We can likely assume it’ll be a one-on-one fighting game event, but outside of that there might be some other details we’re still waiting to learn about.
We’ve already seen quite a few early and launch MK 1 esports events. The game is playing pretty well as a competitive fighter. Getting this bigger circuit though will bring it in-line with tournaments like the Arc World Tour or Capcom Cup. Hopefully, this will help MK 1 to continue to bring the best MK players in to compete.
This will be a wider circuit going for a few months. At the end of it, it seems like there will be 20 players overall making it to the Finals. We’re not quite sure when that will be just yet, but we’ll likely have close to a year of competitive events before it starts up.
