For the early 2000s and much of the 2010s, San Diego Comic-Con was one of the biggest events on the yearly calendar to launch genre blockbusters.
Film studios began to shy away from it in the years leading up to the pandemic, but streaming and TV filled some of that void. Now though, with the double strike going on, the newest edition of the event will be potentially the quietest Comic-Con for media panels in many years.
Hollywood studios Disney, Warner Bros., Sony and Universal were already sitting it out, as were streamers Netflix and HBO, before the actor’s strike launched. Now that it has, a bunch of previously announced panels have also been cancelled.
TV series like “The Wheel of Time,” “Jury Duty,” and “Abbott Elementary” have all scrapped their panels, as has Legendary, which was secretly planning to bring a bunch of “Dune: Part Two” stuff. Neither Marvel or DC will have a Hall H panel this year.
Despite all the setbacks, some presentations will continue on, such as Paramount Animation’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”. In addition, a panel with directors David Leitch, Justin Simien and Gareth Edwards is still taking place and is expected to offer footage from Edwards’ new film “The Creator”.
There’s also panels for AMC’s “The Walking Dead” franchise, the Paramount+ “Star Trek” franchise, the fifth season of “What We Do in the Shadows,” Peacock’s new series “Twisted Metal,” Hulu’s “Solar Opposites,” Amazon’s animated superhero series “Invincible” and John Wick spinoff series “The Continental”.
Comic-Con 2023 runs from Thursday, July 20th to Sunday, July 23rd.
