Sony Pictures
In the space of one day after Sony Pictures posted an open casting call announcement video for its upcoming “The Karate Kid” film, the studio has reportedly already received more than 10,000 submissions according to THR.
Submissions for the worldwide search have come from countries across the globe, including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, India, Singapore, Finland, Sweden and South Africa.
Actors Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio appeared in the video to announce the casting call for the pivotal role of Li Fong in the film which is currently aiming to shoot from March to June next year.
The team is seeking a Chinese or mixed-race Chinese actor in the age range of around 15-17 for the part. The actor being sought needs to speak fluent English with conversational Mandarin seen as a strong plus.
Any background in martial arts, movement, gymnastics and dance is also ideal. Jonathan Entwistle is set to direct the film from a script by Rob Lieber, with Karen Rosenfelt producing.
The project will see Chan and Macchio teaming on screen together for the first time in the series following their turns in the 2010 reboot and 1984 original respectively.
Macchio is expected to film the sixth and final season of the “Cobra Kai” sequel series very early next year and will likely segue into this immediately after.
The new “The Karate Kid” film is set to hit cinemas on December 13th 2024.
