Michelle Paradise, the showrunner on the upcoming fifth and final season of “Star Trek: Discovery,” says she wouldn’t change anything about the new season even if she had known going in it would be the end.
The fifth season went into production like any other season and wasn’t designed to end the series. It wasn’t until they were in production on the finale that they were informed it would be the end.
Paramount then allowed for additional filming to be done to create “a coda” that would properly conclude the show and be added to the finale. Ahead of the season premiere, Paradise tells Screen Rant she is proud of Discovery season 5 and she wouldn’t change what happened:
“We didn’t know going into the season that it would be our final season. But I think what we are exploring thematically, and in terms of our characters’ emotional arcs, it ultimately feels very satisfying.
I don’t think we would have done anything differently, even if we had known that it was going to be our final season. And then, fortunately, the studio and the network gave us the opportunity to go back and do some additional shooting, so that we could wrap up the series as a whole.
And I think ultimately, when you’re ending a series of any kind, but particularly one as beloved as this, you want to make sure it feels satisfying, and you want the characters to have a really a good ending.
You don’t want to leave any hanging threads that will be uncomfortable. You want to wrap everything up in a really positive way. And I think that we were able to do that. I’m really proud of how it turned out.”
Executive producer Alex Kurtzman says the fifth season was already thematically about endings, making it ideal to end the show, and he has confirmed that “nothing is left dangling”.
The last voyage of Captain Michael Burnham and crew takes off from April 4th.
