In February came reports of alleged turmoil between “Yellowstone” series star Kevin Costner and the show’s co-creator Taylor Sheridan over the actor’s filming commitments to the remaining episodes of the current fifth season.
Three months later, it was announced that Costner would not be returning to the show after the current fifth season ends. At the time, it was also reported that there was still no update on when the cast and crew are going to return to Montana to finish shooting the remaining episodes.
Costner himself remains busy with his multi-film Civil War saga “Horizon”. In addition, a once-rumoured spinoff series starring Matthew McConaughey was also announced as officially moving forward at Paramount Network.
Today, Sheridan has spoken with THR in a new feature piece that touches upon the behind-the-scenes drama. He confirms Costner reportedly asked for fewer days for the last season to concentrate on his own western passion project epic:
“My last conversation with Kevin was that he had this passion project he wanted to direct. He and the network were arguing about when he could be done with Yellowstone. I said, ‘We can certainly work a schedule toward [his preferred exit date],’ which we did]”
Costner opted to film his scenes early on while scripts were still being written, but tensions soon rose due to Costner’s schedule. Sheridan says:
“My opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn’t altered. His creation of John Dutton is symbolic and powerful … and I’ve never had an issue with Kevin that he and I couldn’t work out on the phone.
But once lawyers get involved, then people don’t get to talk to each other and start saying things that aren’t true and attempt to shift blame based on how the press or public seem to be reacting. He took a lot of this on the chin and I don’t know that anyone deserves it.
His movie seems to be a great priority to him, and he wants to shift focus. I sure hope [the movie is] worth it – and that it’s a good one. I’m disappointed. It truncates the closure of his character. It doesn’t alter it, but it truncates it.”
With the studio now focused on the Matthew McConaughey-led follow-up series, Sheridan says he’s optimistic about McConaughey getting onboard and dubbing him a ‘natural fit’.
