Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert film may not have held as strong in its second week, with a 63% drop — but it still secured $34 million this past weekend, beating out the new Martin Scorsese film.
Its blowout debut weekend raked in $92.8 million, but “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” saw a 63% drop in week two — still pulling in an impressive $34 million. That’s nothing to sneeze at for a concert film whose fan base heavily skews toward a specific demographic, compared to traditional blockbuster films that cast an intentionally wide net.
Compared to other concert film theatrical releases and their declines going into week two, Swift’s 63% is notably similar to Disney’s “Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert” in 2008.
Swift is on her way to break yet another record, as “Eras Tour” has nearly doubled the previously held record for a concert film following its second weekend, with a cool $132 million. In fact, it became the first concert film in history to make more than $100 million at the domestic box office — and it achieved that number in just five days of showtimes.
And with the ongoing actors’ strike, there’s not quite the competition from blockbuster film releases that there would otherwise be, with titles like Sony’s “Kraven the Hunter” and Warner Bros.’ “Dune: Part Two” moving to 2024 release dates. This past weekend saw Swift beat out Apple/Paramount/Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which debuted at $23 million, despite being from one of America’s most eminent directors.
While projected to hold strong in its third week — especially for a concert film — “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” will lose its No.1 spot to Universal’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s” this pre-Halloween weekend. That film is expected to bring in between $40 million and $50 million over the three-day weekend in its debut.
