At least 7 dead in Mother’s Day weekend shootings across the country

At least 11 people, including a teenager, were killed in a spate of weekend shootings from Florida to Massachusetts.

Three people were killed and 15 others were injured in gunfire at a party attended by an estimated 1,000 people in Stockton, Alabama, on Saturday night, Baldwin County Sheriff’s Capt. Andre Reid said in a statement.

Investigators believe there were multiple shooters as violence broke out about 9:30 p.m. on an open field used as an outdoor venue, he said.

No arrests have been made.

Two people were dead following a shooting at an Atlanta nightclub early Sunday. Officers responded to the Elleven45 Lounge at 2110 Peachtree Rd. NW at around 2:28 a.m. and found six people who had been shot, Atlanta police said.

Two of them were pronounced dead at the scene, and two others were taken to a nearby hospital and are expected to survive. The conditions of the other victims were not immediately known.

“Preliminary investigation indicates the shooting occurred during a physical dispute at the location that escalated to gunfire,” the police department said in a news release.

Police did not say that anyone was in custody in connection with the incident, which is under investigation.

In Tallahassee, Florida, police found “multiple victims with gunshot wounds” at 1147 Apalachee Parkway at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Two men were pronounced dead at the scene, according to an update on X.

“Two other adult victims were transported to a local hospital with gunshot wounds, however their condition is unknown,” Tallahassee police said on X.

Police did not elaborate on the events that led to the shooting or whether anyone was in custody. Tallahassee detectives asked anyone who witnessed the shooting to get in touch.

Elsewhere in Florida at around the same time, Tampa police officers began investigating a shooting in a parking lot in the 500 block of S. Howard Avenue that left three men with gunshot wounds.

All three men were taken to the hospital, where two were pronounced dead. The victims were identified as Kenneth Washington, 28, and Kevon Christmas, 23, Tampa police said. The third man’s injuries were not life-threatening.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, it is believed that the three people injured were known to each other and had previously interacted with one another,” police said in a news release. “Prior to shots being fired, the three adult males were engaged in a dispute that then escalated.”

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said officers and detectives continue to gather evidence and investigate the incident.

“My thoughts are with the loved ones impacted by this violence, especially on a day like today,” Bercaw said about the Mother’s Day shooting.

A 16-year-old was killed in a shooting at a house party early Sunday in Northborough, Massachusetts, a town about 36 miles east of Boston, authorities said. A 17-year-old shot in the buttocks was among three people injured, hospitalized and released, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early said at a news conference.

Paramedics treated others at the scene who refused hospitalization, he said.

Northborough Police Chief Brian Griffin said his department was in touch with the homeowner before the festivities and advised against hosting the party, the second “large gathering” there since April. He said more than 200 people were at the residence overnight.

“There were underage people here,” Early said.

A partygoer flagged down police on patrol in the area about 1 a.m. Sunday, DA’s spokesperson Lindsay Corcoran said by email. The partygoer reported seeing a gun at the party, and police responded by calling for outside agencies to help respond.

As officers were staging nearby, they heard gunfire and rushed to the home, where they were met by “a very chaotic scene,” Griffin said. Three people were arrested on weapons charges and were expected to be arraigned Monday, Early said.

All three suspects, estimated to be 19 to 27, as well as the deceased, were from outside Northborough, Early said. The residence is part of a large property that includes an Airbnb unit, but the home itself, where the party was held, was not a short-term rental, he indicated in his remarks.

On Saturday night, a Euclid, Ohio, police officer was fatally shot after a gunman ambushed him, police said. Officers had responded to a home on the 300 block of East 211th Street following a report of a disturbance before the incident. It was not immediately known what the disturbance was.

The suspect has been identified as Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, who is still at large, NBC affiliate WKYC of Cleveland reported. Vaughn’s court records show that he has been convicted of felonious assault and having weapons while on disability and that he spent time in an Ohio state prison starting in late 2021. His expected release date was in early 2023, though the exact date was unclear, according to the records.

The officer was identified as Jacob Derbin by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, who said in a statement that the person responsible “will be found and will receive the full measure of justice.”

“It is a cruel irony that a mother lost her son on Mother’s Day, and that this murder happened just as we prepare to solemnize our fallen during Police Memorial Week,” Yost said.
