The second season of Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time may have faced some challenges behind the scenes—due to COVID-19 and the writers strike—but the series certainly didn’t show it. The Wheel of Time, which aired its Season Two finale last Friday, gave viewers another brilliant adaptation of Robert Jordan’s fantasy series. (In just eight episodes of television, no less.) The Wheel of Time’s television adaptation a noticeably darker tone to the material than the popular fantasy novels ever did. Perrin (Marcus Rutherford), a blacksmith suspected of being the Dragon Reborn, finally finds a wife—just to have her accidentally killed off. Cruel!
Still, the Season Two finale delighted fans with its depiction of a massive battle that saw everyone’s storylines converge. Egwene (Madeline Madden) shoots some impressive fireballs at the White Cloaks, Ishamael (Fares Fares) concocts a new evil plan, and Loial (Hammed Animashaun) steals the mythic Horn of Valere. Everyone was assured that the Horn—which brings soldiers back to life—was the most powerful object on Earth, but we finally got to see just why… sort of. After everyone races to the tower to help Egwene, the horn summons nearly a dozen soldiers. Just a dozen? Well, at least they successfuly reach the tower.
Then, Egwene mercifully strangles Renna (Xelia Mendes-Jones) to death. It marks a big departure from the books—solidifying the show’s dark direction—but culminating in a much more violent plot for Madden’s potential Dragon Reborn. Although it’s Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) who rises to become the Dragon Reborn. (I should have known from the name!). He shows up in the nick of time alongside Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike), who finally makes her grand appearance in the finale. She assists Rand, who stabs Ishmael in the heart, before quickly learning that there are far more members of the Foresaken coming their way. After all, Jordan wrote 14 novels for The Wheel of Time—including a prequel and two companion books.
Season Three will focus on the Foresaken, according to showrunner Rafe Judkins, but fans shouldn’t expect any new episodes until early 2025. For now, just wait in fear of the Foresaken’s powerful magic—and get ready for even larger battles coming in The Wheel of Time.
