Ghanaian personality Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum recently attempted to get her name into the Guinness Book of Records by attempting to sing continuously for 126 hours and 52 minutes.
Last month, women’s rights advocate, journalist, and event organizer Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum tried to beat a world record that had been standing for over a decade. In 2012, Indian singer Sunil Waghmare sang non-stop for 105 hours, an incredible feat that required resilience, concentration, and mountains of energy. However, the Ghanaian woman claims to have beaten the old record by over 20 hours and is now waiting for confirmation from Guinness Records that her attempt was valid. She told journalists that she was hopeful of a favorable response in the coming days.
Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum began her historic sing-a-thon on Christmas Eve and planned to sing for 117 hours to comfortably beat Wghmare’s impressive record, but she felt so good after 11 hours that she decided to keep going with the record, only stopping at the 126 hours and 52 minutes mark on doctors’ orders.
“There’s only so far you can go as a person… She’s done 126 hours, let’s give her a round of applause. She’s done so well, we’re all proud, she’s put Ghana on the map and made the music industry proud,” Dr. Grace Buckman said. “But as a medical team, her health is our top priority now, and we need to ensure she’s okay. We would have loved her to go until noon, but as a medical team, we need to stop it and protect Afua as much as possible. Fatigue has set in, and we’ll now work on getting her well and ready to bounce back and address everyone again.”
Dr Buckman said that Afua had been affected by acute sleep deprivation and she was starting to show signs of mental stress, so they decided to stop the record attempt.
Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum and her team are now waiting for confirmation from Guinness that her record attempt was valid.
