Meech Lake beach closed due to blue-green algae bloom

Swimmers seeking a reprieve from the early June heat will have to avoid part of a popular lake in Gatineau Park.

The National Capital Commission announced Monday afternoon that Meech Lake’s O’Brien Beach is closed due to a bloom of cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae.

“The beach will remain closed until all public safety requirements have been met,” the commission said in a post on X.

Exposure to blue-green algae can cause gastrointestinal irritation, as well as rashes or throat aches, among other ailments.

The NCC website says “for reasons of public safety, swimming is prohibited in areas where blue-green algae blooms can be seen. Avoid all contact with the water if it appears green or cloudy.”
