Países de las Américas discuten avances en el acceso a la salud sexual y reproductiva

Washington, DC, 28 de septiembre de 2023 (PAHO)- En el marco del 60º Consejo Directivo de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), autoridades sanitarias de países de las Américas aprobaron un informe sobre el acceso a la salud sexual y reproductiva en la región.

El documento recoge el estado actual de los servicios de salud sexual y reproductiva (SSR), así como las respuestas sanitarias y las barreras de acceso existentes, proponiendo medidas para su mejora.

Si bien se destaca que la mayoría de los países han mejorado la cobertura de servicios de SSR y la región alcanza un 84% (por encima del promedio mundial, que es del 74%) existen desigualdades entre los diferentes países de la región y al interior de ellos.

El Director de la OPS, doctor Jarbas Barbosa, expresó que “este es un tema prioritario para la región”. “Los datos que tenemos, a pesar de los avances, nos muestran que debemos mejorar. La tasa de embarazo adolescente en la región, por ejemplo, es inaceptable”, agregó.

Las barreras de acceso a los servicios de SSR son mayores en poblaciones que se encuentran en situación de vulnerabilidad, lo que implica que determinados grupos presenten sistemáticamente peores resultados.

“Abordar estas inequidades es fundamental para lograr la salud universal, proteger los derechos humanos, promover la igualdad de género, luchar contra la discriminación y mejorar los determinantes sociales de la salud”, señaló la directora del Centro Latinoamericano de Perinatología – Salud de la Mujer y Reproductiva (CLAP/SMR), doctora Suzanne Serruya.

La directora del CLAP/SMR también se refirió a la importancia de fortalecer los marcos normativos en la protección de derechos e hizo hincapié en la necesidad de que los países asuman el compromiso político para contar con un financiamiento adecuado y sostenible que permita la implementación de intervenciones costo-efectivas.  

Se estima que el cumplimiento del Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) 3.7 “Acceso universal a servicios de salud relacionados con salud sexual y reproductiva”, conllevaría una reducción de casi el 70% de las muertes maternas y 60% de las muertes neonatales. Además, su cumplimiento impactaría positivamente en otros ODS.

“Garantizar el acceso a los servicios de salud sexual y reproductiva es una cuestión de derechos humanos y una estrategia para el desarrollo de los países”, destacó la doctora Serruya.
