The planned weekend closure of the Queensway because of the replacement of bridges in central Ottawa has been postponed indefinitely.
Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation announced the move Thursday afternoon, just a handful of hours before the shutdown of Highway 417 had been scheduled to begin.

“Rapid bridge replacements are complex undertakings. The MTO and its contractor are working to make sure the project is completed as soon as possible,” an advisory notice said. “The revised date for the highway closure will be shared as more details become available.”

No reason for the delay was given.
On Thursday heavy rainstorms dumped more than 70 mm of rain in six hours, swamping parts of Ottawa causing flooding and power outages.
The project to replace eastbound and westbound bridges at Percy Street had been scheduled as the third weekend closure in less than a month for the key highway running east-west through the core of the national capital. It had been expected to start at 8 p.m. on Thursday and to continue until 6 a.m. on Monday.
A previous memo from the City of Ottawa said the highway would be closed eastbound between Carling/Kirkwood and Metcalfe and westbound between Metcalfe/Catherine and Bronson. Detours would be in place through the weekend.
The Queensway was also closed July 13-17 for replacement of an overpass at Bronson Avenue and July 28-31 for completion of a pedestrian bridge connected to Stage 2 of the LRT system between Woodroffe and Pinecrest/Greenbank.
