When it comes to shopping for denim, it seems like we’re constantly trying a pair of jeans that manage to combine the right shape and a flattering fit with being affordable and fashionable – a combination that seems to leave us wrestling our way out of the seventh pair we’ve tried on and crying out ‘I give up!’

However, it seems 2024 might just be the year that we put paid to those sweaty changing room sparring matches, as Marks and Spencer shoppers think they may have found the impossible – the perfect pair of jeans.

It seems the M&S Wide-Leg Jeans, £35 here, have managed to check off just about every box we have when it comes to searching for the right pair of denim, combining a great fit with a flattering shape and an affordable price point – truly the unicorn of jeans.
The dynamic denim has a slim fit at the hips before immediately flaring out into a loose, wide-leg style that’s right on trend right now, with an oversized hem circumference of around 55cm that makes them just the right balance of practical and statement-making.

You’ve got eight different colours to choose from, and they also have a light stretch to them that makes them super comfy, with sizes 6-24 and petite, regular and long leg lengths all available to make sure you get the right fit.
If you prefer a stiffer, less stretchy style of denim then John Lewis’ ANYDAY Wide Leg Jeans, £34 here, are made from 100% cotton and have a similar high waist and wide leg design, with reviews saying: “So pleased with these jeans. Great mid blue colour and relatively soft denim. I bought size 12 and 14 as some reviews suggested they were a small fit. I am a good size 12 and the 12 fit perfectly. At 5ft 7 these were the perfect length. Would definitely recommend. I can see myself wearing these a lot.”
