Four men, one of whom was identified as being part of the scheme to kidnap and murder Toshyna Patterson and her 10-month-old daughter, Sarayah Paulwell, are facing allegations of beating another detainee while in custody.
Roland Balfour, Deamo Lewis, Demario Cadwell and Donovan Callender appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday, on an indictment for unlawful wounding and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. It is alleged that on March 8, the complainant was taken into custody at the Kingston Central lock-up, on suspicion of obstructing the police at a crime scene. The complainant was placed in a cell with the men and a commotion was heard shortly after. An alarm was made and the police ran to the cell, where the complainant was seen bleeding from the right side of his head. He alleged that he was beaten with a full, two-litre bottle of water by the four men, who also kicked him all over his body. He was subsequently transported to the Kingston Public Hospital where he was treated and released back into the police’s custody.
When the matter was mentioned before presiding Judge Simone Walker McFarlane, the prosecutor requested an adjournment as the complainant was not brought to court and the investigator was not present at the hearing. The matter is to be mentioned on June 25.
Balfour, 31, is in custody awaiting his next court date in the Home Circuit Court for the murder and kidnapping of Patterson and Sarayah, the daughter of politician Phillip Paulwell. Lewis, 22, is before the court for breaching the Anti-Gang Legislation. He is accused of being a member of the Umbrella Gang. Cadwell, 35, is before the court for having sex with a person under 16, while Callender is charged with murder.
