A Beryllium security team in Manchester yesterday thwarted an attack by armed robbers, resulting in the demise of one of the assailants.
Initial reports indicated that the truck was robbed and taken from a Mandeville site but was subsequently recovered in the Knockpatrick area. However, Senior Superintendent of Police Stephanie Lindsay, head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Corporate Communications Unit gave an official account.
“There was an attempt to rob a Beryllium truck but the guards were alert, so there was the exchange of fire upon entry and one of the gunmen [is] now deceased and another was held a short while ago with gunshot wounds,” she told THE STAR last night.
Lindsay added, “We have received information that at least one of the security guards sustained injuries during the confrontation, and the vehicle is now secured at a location.”
Highlighting the effectiveness of the security guards and their alertness, Lindsay noted that, “The vehicle was not robbed, they were able to drive the vehicle to a safe location.”
In a statement last night, the security noted that a Beryllium Limited crew was attacked by gunmen in Grey Ground, Manchester. One gunman was shot and killed during the attempted robbery.
“We take this opportunity to thank the brave men and women of our company for their unrelenting courage as they face unprecedented risk in their daily duties. We implore members of the public who may have information about this heinous actto immediately contact the Jamaica Constabulary Force. We continue to work closely with the police as they investigate this criminal act,” the company said.
This was the second attack on a Beryllium security team in Manchester for this year. On August 25, a team was robbed after leaving a bank in Mandeville. Five passers-by were shot.
