The bodies of two Brits have been discovered in a burned-out rental car in Sweden, as a horrifying double murder investigation has been launched.

The pair were found shot dead after firefighters were called to reports of a vehicle on fire on a dirt road in Malmo on Sunday afternoon.

Examinations revealed the two victims, both British citizens who are yet to be identified by police, had been shot before the car was set ablaze in Fosie region of the busy seaside city. Police are refusing to rule out “gang violence” in connection with the case.

It comes as Interpol has been called in to help with the investigation.

Initial enquiries suggest that they rented a car at Copenhagen Kastrup airport before they were found on the other side of the Swedish border.

Detectives say the have some “idea” of who the victims are.

Police have since launched a manhunt – but no further details have been announced on the motive or any potential suspects.

The victims’ bodies were found in a burned out rented Toyota Rav4.

Local news website Aftonbladet reports that there are “traces in the investigation that indicate more acts of violence” may be possible – with fears the suspected killer could strike again.

Police are asking for information about any sightings of the Danish-registered car.

They want anybody who saw the black Toyota between 11.30am and 2pm on Sunday, July 14 to get in touch.

According to local reports, the victims were last seen travelling past the nearby Öresund Bridge toll station on Sunday afternoon.

Swedish Police Authority spokesperson Kerstin Gossé said: “We have to keep everything open. It is nothing that I can speculate on this early in the investigation.”

“So far, we are keeping tight and restrained so that the preliminary investigation can have its way.”

The Foreign Office travel advice for Brits heading to Sweden warns that gang-related crime has been reported in three main areas, including Malmo.

It says: “Violent crime does occur. Gang-related crime, including knife crime, shootings and explosions, has been reported in Malmö, Stockholm and Gothenburg.

“Take particular care of your belongings in major cities as pickpockets often target tourists for passports and cash.”
