Saskatoon Provincial Court exteriorWahdan Yahia Ismaeil was sentenced on two counts of assault causing bodily harm and other charges after stabbing two people during a brawl at Divas Nightclub in downtown Saskatoon in the early hours of Dec. 4, 2021.

Wahdan Yahia Ismaeil kissed his girlfriend and hugged friends and family before being taken straight back to jail.

Following his goodbyes to those who turned up for his sentencing at Saskatoon provincial court on Monday, Ismaeil was taken away to serve his sentence for two counts of assault causing bodily harm and other charges. In February, Ismaeil pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm for stabbing two people during a brawl at Divas Nightclub in downtown Saskatoon in the early hours of Dec. 4, 2021.

He also pleaded guilty to unauthorized possession of a loaded, restricted firearm that was found his vehicle at the time of his arrest, as well as two counts of breach of curfew and an obstruction charge.

Monday afternoon’s proceeding was short and to the point. Justice Doug Agnew agreed to a joint sentence submission from Crown prosecutor Aaron Martens and defence attorney Brian Pfefferle, asking for a two-year jail term for the 27 year old. With 81 days already served, the total remaining on the sentence was 649 days.

Ismaeil, who did not have a prior criminal record, originally faced two counts of aggravated assault, a more serious crime. But the charges were reduced in part because he was a Crown witness who gave evidence that helped convict a Saskatoon maker of child sexual abuse material.

In February, court heard that Ismaeil was confronted by a man at the nightclub. Ismaeil brandished a small knife and stabbed the man in the stomach. Bedlam broke out and Ismaeil stabbed a second person, who was a bystander.

Justice Agnew pointed out during Monday’s sentencing hearing that the wounds of the two people stabbed were not significant, requiring no more than 10 stitches to close.

When police followed Ismaeil to his vehicle, a brief pursuit ensued. A bloody knife was found on his person and officers found a loaded handgun with blood on it in his vehicle.

During the February court proceeding in which Ismaeil pleaded guilty, Pfefferle said his client and friends had been shooting at a licensed shooting range before going to the bar. Ismaeil did not own the gun.

Ismaeil is a Canadian citizen originally from Egypt. His family lives in Sudan and Saudi Arabia.
