Family behind beloved garden centre and café near M60 puts business up for sale after 52 years

A family who has run a beloved garden centre and café near the M60 in Oldham have decided to sell up after more than 50 years.

Daisy Nook Garden Centre, which is based on Stannybrook Road in Failsworth, first opened in 1972 and has become a popular place for gardeners ever since. Based on the five-acre site of a former farm, the garden centre sells a range of indoor and outdoor items, as well as clothes, gifts and crafts.

It has also been popular with dog walkers at the nearby Daisy Nook Country Park who have wanted to stop by to the centre’s 98-cover Café Riverside for a bite to eat and to enjoy the outdoor terrace area with views overlooking the River Medlock.

Owned by the Calder family, the centre regularly hosts a series of events, including gardening clubs, art classes, flower shows and local produce markets. It has also previously housed a Coronation Street exhibition and also had visiting talks and events from TV stars including Diarmuid Gavin and Jennie McAlpine.

More than ten years ago, the garden centre underwent a huge £1.5m refurbishment which saw it triple in size to cover the same amount of area as four football pitches. It is located just a 15-minute drive away from junctions 22 and 23 of the M60.

Located in the shadow of Medlock Hall, the centre’s chairman Richard Calder, 76, said the time has now come to put the business up for sale after admitting that no younger generation of his family wished to take over ownership.

It is hoped that a new owner will take on the garden centre as it is in order to keep its employees in jobs. It is thought that around 30 staff currently work at the centre.

Posting on social media, Richard posted: “After an amazing 52 years we are advertising the garden centre for sale – although we expect to be here a while yet! We have loved running the centre and getting to know so many loyal customers however we don’t have another, younger, generation of the family wanting to take it on so it’s inevitable that we offer the business for sale.

“We are advertising it as a ‘going concern’ and hope very much to find a buyer who will continue and develop the business and ensure that our wonderful team of staff stay here. We’re advised that this won’t be a quick process, so we’ll be around for quite a while yet, I’m sure. We will be running the business as normal until such time as a new owner takes over.”

Specialist business advisors Christie & Co. will be handling the sale of the property. Director Andrew Birnie commented: “We’re delighted to have been instructed to sell Daisy Nook Garden Centre on behalf of the Calder family, who have built a fantastic garden centre business over the past 50 plus years.

“With an enviable location next to Daisy Nook Country Park and space to extend and add concessions, this sale represents a fantastic opportunity, and we look forward to finding a suitable owner to take the business forward.”
