World Championships winner and fastest woman alive over 200 metres, Shericka Jackson, was denied the World Athletics Female Athlete of the Year Award after making her second shortlist.
A revised format of the awards saw Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon and United States of America’s Noah Lyles taking the track award for women’s and men’s, respectively.
Kipyegon was favoured for the award after securing three world records in middle and long-distance running.
Lyles, who went unbeaten in the 200 metres for the season, won the award for his three gold medals at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, this year.
In the field category, Sweden’s Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis and Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas were awarded Men’s and Women’s Athlete of the Year, respectively.
Duplantis was awarded for improving his world records in the indoor and outdoor pole vault, while Rojas claimed the honour of winning her fourth World Championships triple jump title.
“The depth of talent and the outstanding performances in our sport this year more than justify the expansion of the World Athletics Awards to recognise the accomplishments by these six athletes across a range of disciplines,” said World Athletics’ president, Sebastian Coe.
“Our World Athletes of the Year alone have achieved seven world records between them, as well as a host of World titles and major wins, so it is only fitting that they be recognised as the Athletes of the Year in their respective fields,” he added.
Additional awardees included Rising Stars Kenyan athletes Faith Cherotich, the World Championships 3,000 metres steeplechase bronze medallist in the women’s category and Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the World Championships 800 metres silver medallist in the men’s category.
Jamaican Roshawn Clarke was also nominated for the Men’s Rising Star of the Year Award.
