Based in Woodland, California since 1991, Dr. Newell is a seasoned chiropractor who recently retired from his established practice Woodland Chiropractic in December 2023. Offering a range of services to patients, from X-rays and sports physicals to commercial driver’s license medical examinations, boutique chiropractic care, and more. The thriving practice continues through the leadership of Dr. Steve Hernandez, a graduate of UC Davis and a Palmer Alumni.
A compassionate and caring doctor well-known for chiropractic as a prevention for many common causes of illness, Dr. Newell has treated patients from all over the world, from Hong Kong to Hungary, Sweden, and beyond. He specializes in the treatment of the Gonstead and Activator Methods. Dr James Newell, inspired by his father Dr Eugene Newell, who was awarded The Chiropractor of the Year in 1975 California, an advisor to Governor Edmund Brown in addition to being one of the founders of Palmer West Chiropractic College San Jose campus. After having the opportunity to work alongside his father for 15 years, Dr. James Newell became determined to continue his father’s legacy and now the legacy lives on with Dr. Steve Hernandez.
In preparation for his career, Dr. Newell studied at Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport Iowa, earning a Doctor of Chiropractic in 1977. He also has credentials as a certified Department of Transportation medical examiner for truck drivers and as an X-ray technician. Throughout his 45-year professional career Dr. Newell taught and mentored chiropractic medicine to over 600 students from the University of California, Davis, and medical assistants from junior colleges by facilitating a comprehensive learning platform. Some of the interns studied further and became chiropractors. Dr Newell is also well known within the hard-working Hispanic community in Woodland and Sacramento California for his ongoing support, commitment to encourage and promote higher education, public health, and overall wellness.
As a dedicated civic leader, Dr. Newell is a Vietnam veteran who honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy as a corpsman medic between 1968 and 1972. During the early stage of his career, he served for his hometown’s police department, fire, and ambulance EMT in Geneseo, Illinois, from 1972 to 1975. Dr. Newell also became the youngest elected mayor of Geneseo in 1975 and was a liquor commissioner and ajudge in Henry County, Illinois.
Dr. Newell is now focusing on sharing his time, knowledge, and experience with the local community. As a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he is dedicated to follow Jesus Christ’s teachings to seek out members who need help and assistance. He also spends time studying the scriptures, praying, and attending Temple ordinances.
In light of his success, Dr. Newell has been recognized with plaques from Senator John Garamendi of California and a local California congressman and from the Daughters of the American Revolution. The business also received a Small Business of the Year Award in 2020.
