I normally enjoy reading the opinions of Steve Simmons. We don’t always agree, but then sports views are often varied from one person to another. His Simmons Says column on Dec. 31 had his picks of whom he’d have on next year’s ballot for induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame. I was flabbergasted he neglected to include Ontario boy Bernie Nicholls. The numbers put up by Nicholls should have gained him entry already. Anyone who takes the time to compare his numbers to those of Steve’s picks will see my point.

(Picks for the HOF have never been without debate)
SIZE MATTERS
“When big vehicles meet small driveways” (Brian Turner, Driving.ca, Dec. 21) blames developers and land-use planners when the vehicles people buy can’t fit in garages or driveways. What’s next? Blaming developers and architects when you buy a sofa that won’t fit in your living room? Everybody should take responsibility for their own bad choices and stop trying to pass the buck. There are lots of reasonably sized vehicles in the marketplace, so just stop supersizing everything and the problem goes away.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Re “Can a petition convince Toronto city council to stop Dundas renaming” (Denette Wilford, Dec. 20): The accompanying video from Brian Lilley about Henry Dundas’ strategic legislative role in ending slavery, appointing abolitionist John Graves Simcoe and firing of slave smuggler George Yonge of Yonge Street fame should be compulsory viewing by councillors and Mayor Olivia Chow. As for the proposed name, Sankofa, it seems odd a Ghanaian word is chosen when Ghana historically was a pre-colonial hub of Indigenous slavery and became a major supplier to the Atlantic slave trade, with slavery activity extending well into the 20th century. Illiterate and ignorant people should not be knee-jerk cowing to activists by pusillanimously messing with renaming streets, buildings and landmarks for expedient political gain. It’s bad enough for them to be in office feigning competence about more important issues in the first place.
