Microsoft down: Sky News goes off-air amidst global outage

A major software outage linked to a Microsoft update has wrought havoc for businesses worldwide, with many flights grounded and patients left unable to get GP appointments.

The widespread network issue has impacted media organisations including Sky News, banks, contactless payments, airlines and other industries.

Microsoft 365 said in a statement: “Our services are still seeing continuous improvements while we continue to take mitigation actions,” they said on X this morning, adding: “We still expect that users will continue to see gradual relief as we continue to mitigate the issue.”

The outage appears to have come about due to an issue with cybersecurity software firm Crowdstrike. On Friday, the tech firm said it had received “widespread reports of BSODs on Windows hosts”.

BSODs or “blue screens of death” commonly describe a system crash on Microsoft’s Windows.
