Air conditioners that are also heaters and ice-makers that can boil water are making inroads into the home appliance market as temperatures in Korea become more extreme as a result of climate change.
LG now makes air conditioners that also work as heaters in the winter, developed to meet demand for appliances that are more effective in instantly warming up the home than boilers in a country with less and less central heating.
Dehumidifiers used to be popular only during the muggy monsoon, but now they also have air-filtration functions that can be used in the spring and fall when fine dust pollution becomes a problem. They are even capable of filtering formaldehyde and ammonia from the air.
Once Cuckoo Homesys’ ice makers became capable of supplying hot water, sales jumped around 40 percent on-year in the slow season last winter.
The all-season devices have proved a boon for makers of appliances for which there used to be only seasonal demand.
Kimchi refrigerators, specially designed for the kimchi-making season in winter, can now serve as second refrigerators for other kinds of food. Winia makes a kimchi refrigerator that also works as a wine fridge or for meal kits popular among Korea’s growing number of singles. And Samsung’s high-end Bespoke kimchi refrigerator has added functions to keep some 23 different kinds of vegetables, grain and wine fresh in ideal temperatures.
