Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s trip to Nigeria is a positive move to help improve their public image, a PR expert says.
A poll by YouGov, released in April, shows that the pair continue to be unpopular in Britain with 31 percent having a favourable opinion of Harry and only 26 percent favourable of Meghan, according to the 2,004 adults asked.
However, in the US where the pair live, the results are more favourable – with Meghan as popular as King Charles, according to a new poll by Newsweek.
But crisis management and PR expert Abesi Manyando told Daily Express US that the couple’s upcoming trip to Nigeria could help bolster their popularity and help repair their public image.
Meghan is expected to join Harry in Nigeria this week, following his brief visit to England, where the pair will engage in talks about the Invictus Games.
The couple are understood to have been invited by the Chief of Defence Staff – the highest-ranking military official in the country.
Manyando said: “Harry is very committed and passionate about his philanthropic work and military families. He may be exploring different ways of elevating the Invictus Competition and bringing awareness to his philanthropic endeavors in Nigeria and the global community.
“Meghan revealed that she had Nigerian ancestry on her podcast last year, so this is an amazing opportunity for the couple to learn and embrace Nigerian traditions and customs.”
She added: “Throughout his life, Harry has been visibly present in other African countries, and this is no different. Harry is a royal who has always been culturally diverse, like his mother.

“Engaging with leaders in Nigeria and heads of other philanthropic foundations would be excellent for Harry and Meghan. It also shows Harry and Meghan leaning into what is expected of a Duke and Duchess and minimizes the ‘Hollywood’ perception that works against them in the UK.”
Harry’s parents, then-Prince Charles and Princess Diana, undertook a five-day royal visit to Nigeria 1990.
The late Princess of Wales, was known for her philanthropic work and humanitarian efforts in African countries. Most notably, exposing the danger of landmines by walking through an active one in Huambo, Angola.
While the Royal Family did not attend the ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral on Wednesday where Harry gave a speech, Diana’s younger brother, Earl Spencer, and older sister, Lady Jane Fellowes, attended to support their nephew.
