The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has issued a warning about swimming at Sandpoint Beach after detecting high levels of bacteria in the water.
The health unit last checked the water on Wednesday, and determined the beach was “unsafe for swimming.”
“High levels of bacteria in these waters may pose a risk to your health,” the health unit said on its website.

Previous testing on May 15 and May 22 did not show high levels of bacteria at the beach.
The health unit said it monitors beach water quality at eight public beaches at least once a week between June and September to make sure that E. coli bacteria counts are at safe levels for swimming.
The health said it generally takes the samples every Wednesday, and ensures the testing results will be available before each weekend.
No beach resampling will be conducted for beach closures, the health unit said.
“The bacterial counts listed reflect the conditions at the time of sampling,” the health unit said. “Water quality can change from day to day depending on the weather conditions and lake levels. Although the beach might be open, we recommend not swimming if there was a recent heavy rainfall (at least 48 hours), if the water is cloudy, or if you are unable to see your feet when in the water.”
Results of the water testing are available at wechu.org. You can also check the results by calling the health unit’s Beach Hotline at 519-258-2146 ext. 1490.
