2024 ESPYs: Patrick Mahomes Denies Shohei Ohtani the Honor of Joining Caitlin Clark and A’ja Wilson in Super-Exclusive Club

The Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard was ablaze with star power tonight as the 2024 ESPYs unfolded, hosted by the iconic Serena Williams. While the event celebrated a multitude of athletic achievements, one storyline dominated the night: the battle between Patrick Mahomes and Shohei Ohtani.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, fresh off his third Super Bowl victory, was the reigning champion of the coveted Best Male Athlete and Best NFL Player awards. His adversary in the former category, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ two-way phenom, sought to join an exclusive club of athletes who have won multiple ESPYs in a single year.

The stakes were high, as only a select few, including legends like LeBron James and Tiger Woods, have achieved this feat. Shohei Ohtani, nominated for Best MLB Player and vying for Best Male Athlete, had the chance to etch his name alongside these giants. Because, in the world of sports, winning one ESPY is a monumental achievement. Winning two is a testament to an athlete’s dominance across multiple categories. This year, two athletes joined this exclusive club:

Caitlin Clark: The Iowa Hawkeyes basketball sensation was honored with both the Best College Athlete and Women’s Sports award and the Best Record-Breaking Performance for her historic scoring feat.

A’ja Wilson: The Las Vegas Aces superstar, fresh off back-to-back WNBA championships, claimed both the Best Athlete, Women’s Sports, and Best WNBA Player awards.

Could Shohei Ohtani join this elite group? The anticipation was palpable.

When the moment of truth arrived, it was Patrick Mahomes who once again ascended the ESPYs throne. As Andy Reid, the Chiefs’ head coach, accepted the awards on Mahomes’ behalf, the emotion in his voice was evident.

“I’ve been around this kid for a few years now, and to watch him grow as a football player, as a teammate, and as a leader has been phenomenal,” Reid declared. “But really more than that, to watch him grow as a father and as a husband. That’s been probably the best part of that.”

Mahomes’ victory was a testament to his consistent excellence on and off the field. However, it also meant that Shohei Ohtani’s quest for a double win was denied, keeping the exclusive club’s doors closed for another year. And while the Mahomes-Ohtani rivalry captivated the audience, the ESPYs turned out to be about more than just individual accolades.

Beyond the awards, the 2024 ESPYs were a night of inspiration and kindness

The event honored a diverse array of athletes, from rising star JuJu Watkins, who claimed the Best Breakthrough Athlete award, to the legendary Simone Biles, recognized for her triumphant comeback in gymnastics.

The night also saw poignant moments of reflection and inspiration. Steve Gleason, the former NFL safety who has courageously battled ALS, received the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. Dawn Staley, the renowned women’s basketball coach, was honored with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. And Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, accepted the Pat Tillman Award for Service, a testament to his dedication to supporting veterans.

Beyond the glitz and glamor, the ESPYs served a higher purpose. The event raised awareness and funds for the V Foundation for Cancer Research, a cause close to the heart of ESPN and the late Jim Valvano. This year, the ESPYs helped raise millions of dollars for cancer research, a fitting tribute to Valvano’s legacy.

As the curtain fell on the 2024 ESPYs, it was clear that the night was not just about who won or lost. It was a celebration of the human spirit, the power of perseverance, and the unwavering pursuit of greatness.
